Images of Argentina

These pictures were taken during a trip to Argentina in September, 2016. We spent part of the trip in Patagonia, in and around the city of Bariloche and Nahuel Huapi National Park, and I was able to do some skiing at the Catedral Alta Patagonia ski area, including, for the first time ever, skiing on my birthday. We also spent several days in Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city in Argentina.

Patagonia

Bariloche City Hall. This building, like many in the area, is in a Euro/Alpine architectural style, brought to this part of Argentina by the numerous German, Italian, and Austrian immigrants who settled in this part of Argentinian Patagonia.

Horses are an integral part of the culture of Patagonia and the Argentinian Pampas. I got a picture of these horses crossing a stream in the National Park.

Glaciers on Cerro Tronador, which translaters to the Thunderer Mountain. It is so named because when the glaciers move, they make sounds like thunder, which can be heard a number of miles away from the mountain.

View from the top at the Catedral ski area, so named for the nearby Cerro Catedral, the mountain that resembles a cathedral. From here you have an expansive view of the Andes and Lago Nahuel Huapi, the large lake for which the National Park is named. Also near the center of the picture you can see Refugio Lynch, a refuge for mountaineers that was built before the ski area even existed, and now serves great food and drink with a spectacular view. Such an impressive place that Andrew Zimmern included it as a stop on one of his food travel shows. When I took this picture, there were also some nice lenticular clouds above the mountains.

Buenos Aires

This image of Eva Peron, affectionately known as Evita, is on a high-rise building that houses a broadcasting company.

Colorful housing in a prime spot adjacent to the Boca Juniors soccer (in Argentina, futbol) stadium. Argentina is the current World Cup Champion.

The Casa Rosada, Argentina's seat of government. It shares the central square of Buenos Aires with the Buenos Aires Cathedral and Buenos Aires City Hall.

A panorama image of the Recoleta Cemetery, a true city of the dead. Many prominent Argentinians are buried here, including Eva Peron and more than a half dozen presidents of Argentina.
