

These pictures show the Hassan II Mosque, which is the second-largest religious structure in the world. Only St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is larger. The Hassan II Mosque is impressive both inside and outside. Note that the minaret is square. This is typical of Morocco, unlike most other Islamic countries where the minarets are usually round.

What is now Morocco was, for the most part, within the Roman Empire, as was all of north Africa near the Mediterranean Sea. We visited Roman Ruins here and also near the capital city of Rabat.

These mountains, not far to the south of Marrakesh, rise to higher than 13,600 feet, similar to the high peaks of the Rockies in the United States. There is even a ski area not too far from here, although it closed for the season a couople weeks before we were there.
