Sunset Snowstorm, San Juan Mountains, CO, November 5, 2013

by John Farley

On November 4 and 5, a snowstorm occurred over much of Colorado's mountainous terrain. In the San Juans, the storm produced as much as 9 inches of snow (at the Wolf Creek Ski Area), with some larger amounts in other mountain ranges farther north. The Steamboat Ski Area, for example, got 17 inches over the period from November 4-6. Very little snow fell in the valleys - Pagosa Springs, for example, got just a dusting. However, as the setting sun on November 5 illuminated the trailing edge of the snowstorm, the effect was truly spectacular. Here are a few pictures, taken looking across Village Lake in the Pagosa Lakes area, toward the mountains.
