Sun Halo and Lenticular Clouds,
Loveland Ski Area, CO, April 24, 2014

by John Farley

While skiing at the Loveland Ski Area on April 24, I saw two interesting weather phenomena. First, as a band of cirrostratus clouds passed over, I noticed a nice sun halo while riding Chair 1. After I got off the chairlift, I used the corner of the ski patrol shack near the top of the lift to shelter the sun so that I could get this picture of the sun halo:

Later, after the cirrostratus passed over and the sun was bright again, I was skiing Chair 8, which is located basically across I-70 from Chair 1 (you cross by skiing above the Eisenhower Tunnel). Looking southeast across route 6 as it climbs to Loveland Pass, I noticed some lenticular clouds above the ridge of mountains:

I love it when I can combine skiing with weather photography!
