Lightning, Late Evening February 4, 2008

Around midnight the evening of February 4, I got some photos of in-cloud lightning looking across Dunlap Lake in Edwardsville as a line of strong storms approached the St. Louis area. One of the interesting features of these pictures is that they are the first lightning pictures I ever took looking across a frozen lake! (Unfortunately, the ice, which by now had some water on top from melting snow, does not show up too well in the pictures, though you can see a reflection of some of the lights). There were a couple SVR warnings on this line of storms, and the storms did produce a few reports of marginally severe hail. The entire area was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch at the time. No severe weather occurred in Edwardsville, but the storms did produce heavy rain as they trained over the Edwardsville area after 1:00 a.m.
